The outer husks from the seeds of Psyllium (Plantago ovato) are effective at lowering both the total cholesterol and the 'bad' LDL-cholesterol, as it's very concentrated in soluble fiber Soluble fiber helps to lower cholesterol by binding to the ‘bad' cholesterol and taking it out of the body.
Soluble fiber lowers cholesterol through binding of bile acids in the intestinal lumen resulting in decreased absorption of cholesterol and increased faecal excretion of cholesterol. The ensuing bile acid depletion increases hepatic demand for the de novo synthesis of bile acids from cholesterol. This requirement is met, in part, by increased hepatic LDL receptor activity, which in turn reduces circulating LDL.
Psyllium husk when eaten expands in the stomach and helps push its contents out of the body. It can absorb moisture from the surrounding areas, helping to effectively moisten hardened stools and relieve constipation.
Acidity Husk coats the stomach lining with a protective layer and in turn protects it from the burn of acidity. |
